About Me

About Me

Hi there! I'm Jessica Campbell, an Ottawa-based freelance journalist passionate about uncovering the stories that make our communities tick. After moving across the country to study journalism in Canada's capital, I've embarked on an incredible adventure, exploring 20 countries (and counting!) and diving into my interests in politics, human rights and the ways policy decisions shape everyday lives.

I kicked off my journalism career at the East Central Alberta Review, where I had the chance to dive into a range of topics. I covered everything from local politics and arts to the impact of inflation on honeybee farms—where beekeepers were struggling with hive losses and facing steep costs to replace them (and yes, I even held the queen bee!).

Reporting for the Kingston Whig Standard, I highlighted how adding more beds to the Pediatric Unit at Kingston Health Sciences Centre allows more families to avoid long trips to Ottawa or Toronto, ensuring children receive care closer to home. Making it easier for the entire family.

I also did a short stint in TV with Global News, covering the ins and outs of the federal government on Parliament Hill. From chasing liberal rebels to looking into Canada’s new immigration policy, I got to be witness Canada’s political landscape up close.

Throughout my career, I've contributed to The Charlatan, Capital Current and Her Campus, reporting on a variety of beats from sports to politics. In addition to my print work, I’m also producing a new show for CKCU-FM, Carleton University's campus-based radio station.

Recently, I dove into the buzz around AI in journalism by reporting on a panel called "Journalism and Artificial Intelligence: An Industry Roundtable." Engaging with experts on how AI is transforming newsrooms gave me valuable insights into the exciting changes ahead.

On top of that, I'm currently working on a documentary about the History of the Black Press in Ottawa—an exciting project that brings attention to a rarely talked-about chapter in Canada's media landscape.

In addition to my journalism work, I've built a diverse freelance content writing portfolio. As a content writer for CAA North and East Ontario, I've crafted everything from insider travel tips to expert automotive advice, creating content that speaks to a broad audience.

I’m always on the lookout for new opportunities to tell impactful stories—whether through investigative reporting, political coverage or projects that highlight underrepresented voices.
