Superfluity Thrift Shop asks donors to donate within store hours

Superfluity Thrift Shop is asking people not to donate after the store is closed. They have been having issues with people stealing from their donation bins after the store is closed and on the weekends.

“If it’s after or before [hours] people are able to get in,” said Nancy Land, the current president of Superfluity’s board.

Land recommends that people only drop off their donations during store hours to ensure that their items go to the store instead of going to people stealing.

Superfluity has been very successful in the past few years, and the stealing, “it’s disturbing,” Land explained.

They run entirely on donations and volunteers and then donate all their proceeds to local charities.

The store has approximately 65 volunteers that work to ensure that the store can stay open and to sort the donations.

Land said approximately 75 per cent of the volunteers are over 65 years old. The stealing makes it hard and creates more work for the volunteers.

“They just dump things,” Land said when speaking about what is left in the bin after people go through them and steal. She explained that when everything is dumped in the bins, you don’t know what could be in it, which makes it dangerous for the volunteers.

Land explained that the best way to ensure this doesn’t happen is to drop off donations during store hours when volunteers are there. The store is open from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.
